Youth Leadership Blount (YLB) is a program of Leadership Blount County, a community leadership enhancement and development program. YLB is designed to identify and encourage students who have the potential to be leaders in their schools and community, but may or may not be reaching that potential. The youth class curriculum is focused on learning about Blount County, as well as developing strength and interest in career and college preparedness, volunteerism, and taking on leadership roles.
Each year, a class of rising sophomores is selected by a volunteer committee of alumni from nominations received from the community. Students selected are chosen from the following schools: Alcoa High School, Apostolic Christian Academy, Blount Home Education Association, Clayton-Bradley Academy, Heritage High School, Maryville Christian School, Maryville High School and William Blount High School. Between two and four students are selected from each school. The Leadership Blount Executive Director plans and conducts full-day sessions each month for the ten-month duration of the annual program. Monthly topics may include History and Heritage, Local Government, Education, Health Care, Environment, and Career Exploration.
The Leadership Blount office is located on the Maryville College campus. The building is named the Alexander House and can be reached via the Maryville College Circle Drive or by turning on to Alexander Street from Lamar Alexander Parkway (across from the hospital and next to US Bank).
